Welcome! to govcup.tripod.com an unofficial site for academic competition in Eastern Kentucky.

The official site of the Kentucky Association for Academic Competition is located at www.kaac.com.

Another resource for academic teams is the World of High School Quiz Bowl website. It has a fairly comprehensive listing of tournaments.

The purpose of this site is to post results and contacts for a number of leagues and high schools in Eastern Kentucky to help foster the competitiveness of our region. Last year Pikeville finished first in Quick recall at the state tournament. Johnson Central placed second. In 2002, both Johnson Central and Pikeville were in the top 8 in quick recall at the Governors cup finals in Louisville. The year before Betsy Layne and Johnson Central placed well in quick recall with Betsy Layne, third in the state. This is a competitive region.

To the best of my knowledge the following high school leagues are active.

  • The Jenny Wiley Academic Conference: Roy Johnson commisioner. The Conference is formed of Allen Central, Betsy Layne, The Piarist School, Prestonsburg and South Floyd. Click here for more info.

  • The East Kentucky Academic Conference: Frank Baldridge commisioner. The conference includes: Belfry, East Ridge, Johnson Central, Paintsville, Phelps, Piarist, Pike Central, Pikeville, Shelby Valley, and Sheldon Clark. Click here for more info.

  • The Northeastern Kentucky Academic League: Consisting of Boyd Co., East Carter, Greenup Co., Lawrence Co., Paintsville, Paul Blazer, Raceland, Russell, Rowan Co., Sheldon Clark and West Carter, the league competes on Monday nights. For more information the conference has their own website at nkal.dragg.net.

  • The Kentucky Valley Academic League: Lucy Flannery commisioner. This league includes: Hazard, Perry County Central, Knott Central, Buckhorn, Powell Co., Cordia, Letcher, Estill Co., Leslie Co., Breathitt Co., Lee Co., Owsley Co., Jackson City, Flemming-Neon and Whitesburg.

  • The Limestone Academic League: The ten-team league consists of Bath Co., Bourbon Co., Bracken Co., Fleming Co., Lewis Co., Mason Co., Maysville St. Patrick, Montgomery Co., Nicholas Co. and Ripley (OH).

  • Other notable items include Academic Tournaments.

  • One local tournament of note is the Fleming County Academic Tournament held each year in January. For more information contact Kent Grannis.

  • Another notable tournament is the Johnson County Oktoberfest Academic Competition held on September 20, 2003. This is open to HS Varsity, HS Junior Varsity (Sophomores and underclass) and Middle School. Write Brenda Porter at Johnson Central High School or Pam Burton at Johnson Central Middle School Paintsville, KY 41240 for more information.

  • Pikeville Independent will hold a middle school competition on November 1, 2003. E-mail Johnny Belcher for more information.

  • Paul Laurence Dunbar has their Middle School tournament on November 8, 2003. E-mail Matt Knupp for more information.

The 2003-2004 Focus works have been announce and can be found on the KAAC website: Focus Works.

All of the poetry for the High School Focus Authors: Wordsworth, Shelley and Keats can be found at Bartleby.com. In case you are unaware of this excellent resource, check it out:

Also, you may want to check The Literature Network or Poet's Corner. These are other sources of poems.

The University of Toronto also has an interesting site for the poems. Including annotated editions of many of the poems on the reading list.

The JV Challenge book Mary Shelley's Frankenstein can be purchased from Dover Publications, Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble or best yet from your local bookstore. Also check out the Cliffs Notes Complete version at CliffsNotes.com.
